Gift for
Because I didn't do anything for her birthday yet besides giving her some Mangas orz Time taken in total: about 45 hours Layers in total: 113 Programme(s) used: Adobe Photoshop CS2 Original Size: 2590x2082 Brushes used: Cloud Brushes | Cranes Brush Hurr.... I've been quite inactive lately again and this is the first picture after ee weeks :/ Sorry for that, but now where the exams are as good as over and just Math, Latin and Philosophy are going on my nerves with homework and tests I guess I'll have some more time to draw again *smile* Yes, another gift, you could also call it a very very VERY belated Birthday Gift for a good friend but well o o I've asked her what she wanted me to draw, she listed up four characters and I picked out her main character Andrea. I must say her character changed a lot in the time I knew her, but I personally like her the way she looks like now. But I guess I made her look too much like Amy o o; Anyways, yes there is also the Genesis Doodle colored as I promised C: But now let's get over to a more or less serious description ^^' At first... let's take the character in the foreground again, Andrea ovo I personally like how she turned out and finally something more agile than usual, eh? But to be honest I took the pose out of an Art Book I got for free when I ordered a DVD Box at eBay o.o When I looked trough this artbook I directly loved that pose and wanted to try it out as well. The most difficult parts where the shoes, believe me x_x And since the one foot was cut out I did not really knew how to make it look good as well orz the other one is rather weird as well, don't you think? *sigh* and also the lineart turned out different to the sketch. She was supposed to look happy, now she looks more surprised (in a negative way) :/ But well, overall I am quite happy how Andrea turned out. I also slightly changed her clothes a bit by the way ovo;; Next up is Genesis. You already know the Sketch from my sketch and therefore you already know that I spent a whole day in it and was proud of that sketch like hell. Now where it's finished I'm still very satisfied with it, but I also spotted some parts that I could've done better. For example the clasps of the laces and the laces itself as well. Furthermore... I erased her hair bangs and replaced them with those two long, Silver like ( that Cockahog, yes o_o; ) hair bangs. At first I thought I should leave out those hair decoration I gave her from the very beginning, now I somehow want it back *drop* But - as usual - I'm too lazy to change it again in the end. Furthermore.... Silver-like hair that resist gravity in any way 8D; Then, third, the background o o First of all... No, I didn't draw the Clouds by myself, I used a brush called Xephyrer Brush for it, but I couldn't found it anywhere at the net. I just found a quite similar one and referenced to it in the very beginning of this description. The crane was done with a brush as well. Just in case that someone wants to ask that lol Those buildings you see... I searched for skyline photos in the net and found an interesting looking one of Moscow. Somehow I liked those rounded buildings and tried drawing them on my own. After I was as good as done I added the windows and I personally think that making windows on buildings looking good is damn hard to do o O; Anyway, I'm quite satisfied with the result. In the end I wanna say that this picture overall... makes no sense *drop* A very agile character, a 'just' standing character and a sunny background... I sketched Andrea almost one week after Genesis and then already noticed that they don't fit together that well at all. On the one hand I wanted to redraw Genesis, on the other one I did not want to scrap this sketch forever. In the end I decided to color it and yeah, that's the result. Senseless, but I still love it. The picture turned out so bright and warm... giving myself a feeling of summer somehow =w= I like the summer as long as it is not being too warm~ Well... by the way.... imagine it to be some kind of photo, maybe that makes some more sense lol However, I am off now - watching Rozen Maiden DVDs :3 See ya Andrea the Hedgehog © Genesis the Cat and artwork © I do not feel like reading incredible long messages at the moment, that's why I'm not requesting Critiques at the moment. The Highlights
The image is beautifully rendered. The colors work exceedingly well together despite the contrast between colors, and the cellshading is fantastic. The shadows hit all the right places and are neither too light nor too dark, which is often a problem in cell-shaded pictures. The background adds depth to the image and, while it adds loads of eyecatching detail, it doesn't overwhelm the characters. The expressions and body language also are spot-on. While they are drawn stylistically, they look really natural. I also really like the flow of their clothing! Details like that are what create a great picture.
What Needs to Be Worked On
There isn't much that I can say. For starters, I feel like the angle of the red girl's torso and her lower half are at odds. While the lower half of her body seem to indict that she's in a nearly complete rear view, her top half seems to indict that she's rather only half way there. I think the placement of the arms is causing this. They need to be shifted so that they are placed in front of the chest, not beside it.
Secondly, is it just me or are they just too many windows on the buildings to be plausible? XD While it adds even more detail to the picture, I feel that each window should be larger. Then the number of windows should dwindle a little.
Overall this is a beautiful image. I really, really like it!
Genesis hasn't been submitted to deviantART in a while, and this one leaves nothing to be desired. You usually give characters original poses, and these are definitely unique. They look so real, natural--you have a real talent. I especially like Andrea's expression.
Cel-shading is your most used style, isn't it? I think so ... you have mastered it, yet you still take your time with all of the small details, adding up to 113 layers. This looks like it could be from an anime of sorts.
You seem to be good at drawing [and coloring] backgrounds. They have a real look to them, but retain the cartoony style of your artwork. I enjoy this picture because it is a mix of real and not real... it is a wonderful piece.
